Understanding Coverage for Individuals and Families

The Health Insurance Marketplace allows you to compare benefit packages and prices. You can learn if you’re eligible for a government-sponsored plan, and you can find out if you qualify for financial assistance to help pay for insurance costs.

How to Use the Marketplace

You can use the Health Insurance Marketplace to compare plan prices and benefits from different health insurance companies. You can enroll in a plan for 2020 on the Marketplace at Healthcare.gov (or BeWellNM.com in New Mexico) during open enrollment from November 1, 2019 through December 15, 2019. You only need to complete one application to get health coverage on the Marketplace.

You can also shop for health care coverage through your state’s exchange, which is a service available in every state that helps individuals, families, and small businesses shop for and enroll in affordable medical insurance. Find the Marketplace in your state (or BeWellNM.com in New Mexico) through its website, call center, and in-person assistance.

Coverage Options Available on the Marketplace

All plans on the Marketplace have similar benefits, and they all include essential health benefits, but they differ on how the costs of the benefits are shared between you and your plan. People have different needs and budgets so the plans on the Marketplace are divided into four different categories (Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum). People can find a plan that fits them and their family. Depending on what you think your health needs will be, one plan may fit your situation better than another.

Bronze: Lower monthly payments.
Higher cost when you receive medical care.
Silver: Higher monthly payments than a Bronze plan.
Lower cost than a Bronze plan when you receive medical care.
Gold: Higher monthly payments than a Silver plan.
Lower cost than a Silver plan when you receive medical care.
Platinum: Higher monthly payments than a Gold plan.
Lower cost than a Gold plan when you receive medical care.
